If you have units that is weaker against the enemy, you are most likely to get punished very hard if you try to fight them 1 on 1. Sometimes, in order to advance smoothly it requires some grinding so you get to have stronger units and that can take up to an hour or two depends on which stage. I would give this game a much higher score if it is more flexible on the amount of money you get so you can buy units, characters, etc… since it really makes you grind for levels and money quite often if you want to advance to next stage without losing a few of your best unit.
